During my childhood, I would watch war movies with my father and he would tell me stores about his military experiences. His stories not only made me curious about the military, they also instilled a sense of patriotism in me and a desire to make a difference in our country and the world. These stories were not always positive reflections, nor glamorous tales of military life. What they did convey to me is his regret of leaving the military and that is what intrigued me even further to join the Air Force. The trauma team began to get her hooked up to the monitors and an intravenous line started while I began to set up the Operating Room. As soon as I finished I went to tal k my patient, I told her what was happening and held her hand as we put her off to sleep for her procedure. Just as she fell asleep she looked at me squeezed my hand and said â€Å"please don’t let me die†. I remember the day I took care of a particular Airman that was badly injured. He came in on a chopper and we took him to the Operating Room immediately. He had a tourniquet on his left arm, what was left of it, and his face was shredded from shrapnel and debris. This Airman had been hit by an Improvised Explosive Device and when he arrived we knew, due to the extensive blood loss and the condition of his left extremity that there was no way to save it. In the end he would also lose his sight in his left eye and some acuity in his right eye. I continued to prep him for surgery. As I washed his mangled arm I began to think of his family, if he has a wife, children, how his life will be so dramatically changed when he awakes to discover his left extremity gone and that he can no longer see out of his left eye. After taking care of him and sending him on to Germany to continue his journey home to the states, I thought of him often throughout the next few months of my deployment. Otro ejemplo, es si se necesita hacer una donacià ³n de mà ©dula a un hermano, etc.   Un ejemplo de reunificacià ³n familiar puede ser el caso extraordinario en el que un matrimonio obtiene una visa de inmigrante pero la esposa tiene un bebà © despuà ©s de la entrevista en el consulado pero antes de viajar a los Estados Unidos.   Se aplica inmediatamente por el I-130 pero por retrasos en las fechas de prioridad el bebà © tendrà ­a que estar muchos meses separado de su mam, esperando por un nà ºmero de visa disponible. Para evitar esto, podrà ­a solicitarse. Tambià ©n podrà ­a considerarse como base para un parole la necesidad de cuidar a un familiar muy grave o moribundo que se encuentra en EE.UU. o el deseo de asistir a un funeral de una persona cercana.  ¿Quià ©nes pueden presentar la solicitud de parole humanitaria? Pueden hacerlo cualquiera de las siguientes personas: La persona que necesita el parole. Es decir, el beneficiarioUn abogadoUna organizacià ³n sin fin de lucroUn familiar u otra persona como un amigo que est en Estados Unidos y que  patrocina. En este caso à ºltimo caso se debe enviar prueba de estatus migratorio legal en Estados Unidos, como por ejemplo, pasaporte americano, si es ciudadano, green card, si es residente permanente legal, etc.  ¿Cà ³mo solicitar la parole humanitaria? Para realizar la peticià ³n de parole humanitaria es requerimiento completar dos formularios oficiales, pagar y adjuntar documentacià ³n adicional que apoye la peticià ³n.   Existen dos formas muy parecidas de solicitar el permiso. En primer lugar, si el solicitante que fuera de Estados Unidos presenta la solicitud por sà ­ mismo, es decir, una auto-peticià ³n,  las reglas son las siguientes: Antes de comenzar a rellenar los formularios es necesario presentarse en persona en la embajada o consulado de los Estados Unidos y solicitar una pre-autorizacià ³n para llenar el I-131. Si se obtiene, en algà ºn momento que ya se indicar ser necesario acudir al consulado o a un centro de apoyo para que le tomen al solicitante los datos biomà ©tricos, como por ejemplo, las huellas digitales. Adems, una vez obtenida la pre-autorizacià ³n ya se puede ya completar la planilla  I-131.   Esta planilla, que se llama en inglà ©s Application for Travel Document es utilizado en ms casos que nada tienen que ver con la parole humanitaria. Por esta razà ³n es que es fcil confundirse por lo que se recomienda prestar mucha atencià ³n o contratar a un abogado con experiencia en estos casos. La otra planilla que se debe enviar con la aplicacià ³n es la  I-134 que es una declaracià ³n jurada sobre recursos econà ³micos. Incluir la declaracià ³n de impuestos, prueba de empleo actual y,  si se pide el parole por razà ³n mà ©dica, prueba de cà ³mo se va a pagar el tratamiento. Con este requisito se trata de demostrar que el solicitante no se convertir en una carga pà ºblica en el caso de ingresar a EE.UU. Adems, si un abogado colabora en la peticià ³n de este permiso, debe presentarse la forma G-28. Si se solicita para recibir tratamiento mà ©dico debe incluirse documentacià ³n de por quà © no puede recibir dicho tratamiento en su paà ­s ni en los vecinos, papeles mà ©dicos sobre diagnà ³stico y prognosis (cà ³mo se cree que va a ser la evolucià ³n de la enfermedad), cunto tiempo se cree que va a durar el tratamiento, cul es el costo, cà ³mo se va a pagar y cules son los planes para salir de Estados Unidos cuando finalice el tratamiento. Asimismo, adjuntar toda la documentacià ³n adicional y detallada de apoyo que sirva para demostrar que existe una emergencia y tambià ©n la papelerà ­a con documentos personales, como copia legible del pasaporte del solicitante, su certificado de nacimiento o adopcià ³n y, si los tuviera, los certificados de matrimonio y decreto de divorcio.   Adems, escribir una carta concisa pero que contenga todos los puntos sobre por quà © debe aprobarse la parole humanitaria. Esta aplicacià ³n tiene en la actualidad un costo de $575 dà ³lares americanos, pero verificar siempre antes de enviar la solicitud ya que puede cambiar. No es posible solicitar una waiver para no pagar esta cuota. Adems, las personas entre 14 y 79 aà ±os de edad deben pagar $85 ms en concepto de toma de datos biomà ©tricos. Adems, en este caso, el patrocinador al llenar el formulario I-134 deber presentar los tax returns de los à ºltimos dos aà ±os.  ¿Cà ³mo se envà ­a la documentacià ³n para la parole humanitaria? Depende de dà ³nde est la persona que realiza la solicitud: Si el que solicita el parole es la persona que solicita ingresar a Estados Unidos y por lo tanto se encuentra fuera del paà ­s, entonces la documentacià ³n se entrega o envà ­a al consulado o embajada, quien la remite a la oficina del Humanitarian Affairs Branch (HAB, por sus siglas en inglà ©s), que est ubicado en Washington D.C. To face life’s storms is not to reconcile the past with the future, meaning to be happy with it, but to confront the past, conquer it, and then accept it. Acceptance in this instance, meaning to acknowledge the past, and acknowledge that it cannot be changed. It does not need to be understood, simply recognised as something that has happened. In acceptance, feelings of anger, regret and guilt are dissipated. These are the steps that are to be taken in order to cope, â€Å"weather the storms† of life and move forward. All of the characters in the novel have to cope with their lives, some of which are more difficult than others. Quoyle had many traumatic events in his life, and until he went to Newfoundland he was not coping with them. It was through help from others that he could confront, conquer and accept his past to start truly coping with life. Other characters, including Wavey and Agnis also have to confront, conquer and accept their pasts to cope and get on with life. Although it is not a matter of life and death as to whether the characters cope with life, they will have to face it eventually. Newfoundlanders undertake this idea, and learn how to confront, conquer and accept what happens in their lives. Wavey has her own past to confront and accept. Throughout the novel and her development of the relationship with Quoyle, she has to learn to trust again after her husband’s treatment of her, and accept his death. She did this through her relationship with Quoyle, by learning to develop a mutually open and trusting relationship. Their trust was developed but a sharing of common painful experiences with their spouses, in a safe and comfortable environment. Wavey was able to share her secrets with Quoyle, because he was able to share his with her first. â€Å"The way Quoyle talked of his love, but never the woman? Could pull out one from her own skein of secrets.† (Pg 307) Wavey’s trust enables her to accept her husband’s behaviour towards her and his death, so she can move forward in her life. Another example of a trusting relationship that is formed is one with Agnis and the new Quoyle fam... ...t them. Nutbeem shows his ability to do this after his boat has been destroyed at his farewell party â€Å"’At least you can smile about it.’ Dennis, half smiling to himself. ‘If I didn’t I’d go round the twist, wouldn’t I? No, I’ve decided to smile, forget and fly to Brazil.’† (Pg 268.) Instead of getting upset and trying hopelessly to fix the boat, Nutbeem accepts what has happened, and finds another way around it. Jack displays his acceptance of his life, is shown in the way he goes out on his boat and fishes everyday, even though his grandfather, father and eldest son all died at sea. To reconcile with the past is to forgive, and be contented with it. To accept the past is acknowledge its existence, and the inability to change its facts. Quoyle, through developing new relationships in Newfoundland and discovering his family history, is able to move forward by confronting, conquering and accepting his own past. This is also been reflected in Wavey’s life. Through her relationship with Quoyle she has developed the ability to trust and love again. Going back to Newfoundland enabled Agnis to confront her familial demons, and so to accept her past and move forward into the future.

In the story of â€Å"Sophistication† by Sherwood Anderson there is one character that sticks out as what one would consider a foil, and he is know in this short story as the College Instructor. He is described as dry and a gold digger going after the banker’s daughter. Helen does not really enjoy his company â€Å"she wanted to drive the instructor away† (Anderson 169). She loathed how her mother thought that no man from the town would be worthy of her, or the fortune that would come along with her marriage. Furthermore, she did understand why she could not go after love, but has to go after prestige for her family. He knew that the life of a college instructor could not make him a large amount of money, but he needed a way to fund his studies as a college professor. Also, he never sees himself falling in love with Helen, he even says â€Å"I should marry women with money†, ultimately he is only in it for the money (169). He sees this as an opportunity when he found Helen’s mother wanted her daughter to marry. He thought he has a great opportunity to marry into money. Nevertheless, he never accounted for the wants or feeling of Helen, her wants conflicted with convictions of the college instructor. It could be argued throughout the book that â€Å"He wanted to appear cosmopolitan† (171). Although, this sounded appealing to Helen’s mother, it does not appeal to Helen. She despised the thought of ever being with him, she considered herself a free spirit, not wanting to be held back or told what to do. Proving this, she runs out of her house yelling for George. In her heart she knows that they are the only ones who truly understood each other. Thus, the college instructor is effectively run out of her life after Helen and George go on their silent walk.
